What’s your background, in a couple quick sentences?
Harvard College, then Law School. Legal career, in-house and then as a “generalist” attorney at high tech companies. Finished up legal practice by teaching the final 10 years at the Law School (as a “clinical Instructor” I mentored and supervised 2- and 3-Ls who were practicing actual law for actual clients in a business law/clinic setting). Currently retired, but working a tiny bit for Whole Foods, for “fun”.
What brought you to Harvard and what did you study?
Came to Harvard because it is Harvard. (Translated: my father clearly wanted me to go, over a number of other schools I was admitted to.) My own theory is that I got “in” based on Harvard’s quest for geographic diversity: I grew up in and came from Minnesota.
My intention as always to study Computer Science – but that concentration had not yet been created. I pursued a degree in Applied Math {as applied to social science applications}. A relative poor showing on my Math GREs convinced me to divert to Law.
Where are you now in your career?
Enjoying retirement.
I have my very part-time job at Whole Foods and serve on the Boards of HGSC and of The Gay & Lesbian Review International (publisher of the magazine of that name, but also a substantial 501(c)(3) charity).
Why did you join the HGSC Board?
I want to be of service to the LGBTQ+ community.
What are you excited for in 2026?
In a perfect world, HGSC would resume providing opportunities for gathering and interesting content relative to LGBTQ+ issues.
What's one food you miss most from your Harvard days?
Freshman year English Muffins drowning in butter, at 2am, at Hazen’s adjacent to the Yard.
