HGSC Board Member Profile

Rajit Malhotra (EDM '16, he/his)

What’s your background, in a couple quick sentences?

A New Englander who loves his South Asian culture and leans into design and art. I have a reverence for heritage, but aim to balance that with innovation in most aspects of my life. I also am passionate about K-12 education and global experiences, and nerd out over the newest technologies from vintage-inspired electric cars to red-light therapy.

What brought you to Harvard and what did you study?

Prior to Harvard, my background had been primarily in finance, but I always wanted to found a school that modeled my own experience at a boarding school. While I had exposure to the education sector from a business perspective, I never delved into education pedagogy. I came to Harvard to pursue a Masters in Education so I could better understand education from the perspective of students.

Where are you now in your career?

I have been fortunate to be the CFO and COO of a few different private schools in Manhattan and an education technology start-up. I am now on the entrepreneurial path, building a data analytics company that helps K-12 independent schools leverage their data in more strategic ways.

Why did you join the HGSC Board?

When I was at Harvard, I was not out. It’s been a relatively newer journey for me, but every aspect of my identity that I am proud of and feel a deep connection to has been supported through community. I looked at HGSC as a way to find and build that community in relation to my gay identity – and it has been such a fruitful and rewarding experience!

What are you excited for in 2025?

Admittedly, travel feeds my soul and it is all the better with loved ones. I am heading to Italy a few times this year to celebrate some special moments with friends and then most likely to India to see my extended family.

What do you miss most from your Harvard days?

Late night pizza runs to Noch’s with my classmates.
