Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons Joins Guest Panel
E. Denise Simmons has been committed to serving the City of Cambridge for the last thirty years. She was the Executive Director of the Cambridge Civic Unity Committee in the 1980s, a member of the Cambridge School Committee in the 1990s, and has been a member of the Cambridge City Council since 2002. Simmons was the nation's first African-American, openly lesbian mayor when she was elected to her first term in 2008; she was elected to her second term in January of this year.
Simmons was Massachusetts' first LGBTQ Family Liaison for the Cambridge School District and initiated the first LGBTQ Town Meeting in Cambridge. In her current term, she is working to relaunch the Cambridge Girls Leadership Group, establish a Cambridge Museum, and promote affordable housing resources.
Mayor Simmons holds a B.S. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston and a Master's in psychotherapy from Antioch College. She owns Cambridgeport Insurance Agency, which she founded in 1982.
Mayor Simmons is a photo archivist, family historian, and mother of four. She raises three granddaughters with her wife, Mattie Hayes.
