Bike tour NH Coast and Portsmouth 9/27

Manchester-by-the Sea- Ipswich-Newburyport-Portsmouth New Hampshiore Coast bike tour with lunch Popovers (variable distance: 11, 23, or 47 + miles) (Meet at North Station 8:15am)

 Welcome to the last bike tour of the early Fall Season this Sunday, 9/27

Weather will be gorgeous, with temps in the high 60's!

 

We'll meet at North Station at 8:15 and take the Commuter Rail to Manchester-by-the Sea at 8:30, arriving at 9:20. From there we will cycle to nearly car-free country roads to  Ipswich, where we will stop for a quick coffee at  Zumi's Expresso c. 10:20 an . From there we continue to Newburyport (beautiful seaside town on the Atlantic coast) via Rawley and Old Town Newbury, home of one of the first colonial settlements in the East Coast. We arrive at  Newburyport at c. 11:50. Near Newburyport we will cross into New Hampshire, cycling along the gourgeous coast and stopping at the Hamilton Beach State Park at c.  1:30 for a mini snack. From there we will continue along the coast to Portsmouth, NH, a lovely and gay-friendly town with a wonderful downtown. Upon arrival around 2:45 pm we will stop at the famous Popovers on the Square, and take the Concord Bus back to Boston at c. 4:00 or 5:00 pm (arrival dc. 1.5 hrs later)

The total distance to Portsmouth  is c. 50  miles ( c. 80  km), but you can do a shorter route of 11 (to Ipswich), or  23 miles (to Newsburyport)  or 5  miles by coming back with the commuter rail from Ipswich or Newburyport (for schedules see mbta.com).

 (Those wishing a longer trip can continue from Portsmouth to Amesbury and then along the Merrimac River to Haverhill, (an additional 32 miles)

  and take the train back to Boston at 7:20 pm. )

 

This is not a race: we'll cycle at a steady but comfortable speed of c. 13 mph (c. 18 kph). 

Please bring:

1) desire to have fun!

2) water and snacks

3) a bicycle with good working brakes and lights and properly inflated tires 

4) light-color or bright jacket/shirt
